It’s undeniable that smartphone cameras have come a long way, and while companies like Samsung have always pushed the limits with camera sensors of up to 200 megapixels, the size of the sensor has mostly remained smaller. However, image and camera processing specialist Sony decided to beat Samsung and became the first company to release a 1-inch camera sensor for IMX989 smartphones.
Sony IMX989 will launch on Xiaomi 12S Ultra, the device will launch on July 4, 2022 alongside Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro. You’re looking at a 50-megapixel sensor with a pixel size of 1.5 microns that should provide exceptional performance in low light.
It’s worth noting, however, that some Sony smartphones actually use a 1-inch sensor, but this is a cropped version of the sensor Sony uses in its digital cameras. This makes the IMX989 the first 1-inch sensor specifically designed for smartphones. Sony is also said to be working on a mid-range sensor.
At the time of writing, the ISOCELL GN2 was the largest sensor offered by Samsung; You are looking at a 1/1.12 inch sensor with an original pixel size of 1.4 microns. This means the Sony IMX989 should offer much better video and image quality than Samsung offers. However, it is important to know that many aspects of mobile photography also depend on processing algorithms, so it would be best to leave it on phones that implement this camera. Source
