An Apple spokesperson said that Samsung copied the iPhone and added a larger screen. The Wall Street Journal has released a documentary about the evolution of the iPhone, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary today. The film features interviews with Apple Marketing Director Greg Joswiak, iPhone co-founder Tony Fadell, and iPhone users.
An excerpt from the interview states that Android smartphones had larger screens years before the iPhone. When asked what impact Samsung and other Android smartphone makers had on Apple at the time, Joswiak said they were “frustrating” and accused them of misrepresenting Apple’s technology.
They were frustrating because you know they stole our technology. They took the innovations we created, made a bad copy of them and just added a bigger screen. So, yeah, we’re not very happy. Greg Josviak
Samsung launched the Galaxy S4 with a 5-inch display in early 2013, while the iPhone 5 had a 4-inch display. As a result, Apple launched its first major smartphones in 2014, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, which were in high demand and became one of the best-selling iPhone models in history.
In 2011, Apple sued Samsung for patent infringement, alleging that Samsung copied the iPhone’s design into its Galaxy smartphone lineup. Apple was initially awarded approximately $1 billion in damages, but was later reduced in retrial. Source
