And what does it mean? Very simple, certainly on some occasion, when you look in the address bar or the address to which the link refers, you found something like that:

A little weird URL, right? Is there a source named “fbclid = kldjlHLu8973Kj7gnonayfoen359fjfufhon”? As you may already know, the answer is no. That “chorizo” is nothing but unique tracking code, a resource that allows websites and other services to perform personalized monitoring of a specific user. A method that makes it easier to track a user’s movement over the Internet and is commonly used by services such as Facebook.

A new Firefox feature, as you’ve probably figured out, is able to identify this type of identifiers or beacons and remove them when requesting a resource from your server. In other words, if you click on a link like the one in the example, Firefox will load the home page of server.es, but without entering the following text string when establishing the specified connection. We can navigate more easily this way because we know that an “enriched” URL does not tell the server we are accessing who we are.

In the first implementation of this feature, Firefox will protect us from beacons from the following sites:

  • Olytics: oly_enc_id =, oly_anon_id =
  • Drip: __s =
  • real: vero_id =
  • Hub Spot: _hsenc =
  • Marketo: mkt_tok =
  • Facebook: fbclid =, mc_eid =

As I indicated earlier, the case of Facebook is probably the most paradigmatic (that’s why I used it in the example), but the rest of the services are also large on the network, so they automatically delete them hitchhikers It can also be useful for us.

This feature of Firefox is activated when the strict enhanced surveillance protection mode is selected. To enable it, go to Firefox settings, go to the “Privacy and Security” section, and at the top you’ll find this protection mode, where you can choose a standard, strict, or custom mode that allows you to manually adjust the parameters of this protection.
