Overview of self-propelled artillery installation “Bohdan”

The development of the Ukrainian 2C22 “Bohdana” self-propelled artillery installation of 155 mm caliber is carried out by the Kramatorsk Heavy Machine Tool Construction Plant by a joint decision with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Research and development studies within the framework of the state defense order have been carried out since February 2016. And the first example was shown on July 14, 2018. During the military parade in honor of the Independence Day of Ukraine (August 24, 2018), all Ukrainians were able to see the latest Ukrainian production of the 2C22 “Bohdan” self-propelled guns.

Already at the beginning of 2009, the TASCO company completed the development of a prototype of the Ukrainian self-propelled gun based on the chassis of the KrAZ-63221 car. It is interesting that even then a howitzer of 155 mm “NATO” caliber was installed on the ACS. This caliber is standard for NATO divisional field artillery, which differs from the standard 152-mm howitzer adopted in the USSR. The first ideas about moving away from the Soviet model and transitioning to NATO standards were voiced in 2017 by the commander of the RViA, Major General Vyacheslav Gorbylev.

On July 14, 2018, the first public statement of the Ukrainian ACS “Bohdan” appeared. Then military expert Serhiy Zgurets reportedHe reported that artillery equipment will be shown at the parade in honor of the Independence Day of Ukraine. It also announced the 155mm caliber. After some time, confirmation of the possibility of using the “NATO” standard appeared. After all, such shells “Artem” began to be produced at DAHK.

In July-August 2018 there were doubts as to whether the new self-propelled gun would use a tracked vehicle, for example the Polish AHS Krab, or a wheeled chassis such as the Czech Dana self-propelled gun or the Slovak Zuzana. They were distributed on August 10, 2018, when military expert Serhiy Zgurets shared the first photo of the installation. It was placed on a wheeled chassis.

During the fire tests, the newest HE ER BT active-reactive ammunition, the production of which was started by “Artem” DAHK, was used. The first sample of the system, which passed all tests successfully, was produced in early October 2019. Of course, it is difficult to say about the cost of the “Bohdan” ACS. But before the self-propelled artillery was shown at the Independence Day parade, about 140 million hryvnia was spent on it.
