Starting to use a Wi-Fi network is not a big mystery, but its optimal use is another story. Even today, despite the time when this type of network is with us, many users still make important mistakes and some are still influenced by myths that, as we told you then, no longer make any sense.

In many cases, these mistakes we make can seriously affect our user experience and in some cases they can completely destroy itso we must give them the importance they truly deserve.

We want to help you overcome these mistakes, so we are sharing with you the most serious which take place exactly when we configure and start using the Wi-Fi network. As always, I remind you that the comments are at your disposal and you can leave any questions in them. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Leave the default Wi-Fi settings

And by that I mean both the default channels and the network name and password. In this sense, it should be noted that most routers of the new generation already do automatic channel selection system, but if our router does not have this technology, we will have to make the modification manually by entering its interface. To do this, we must enter “http://192.168.0.1/” without quotes in the Internet browser.

Leaving the network name and password configuration that comes by default is also another serious mistake because in many cases these names and passwords are susceptible to brute force attacks, and can be obtained relatively easily. This is a clear risk to the security of our network, and we make it very easy for intruders. Take a moment to change your Wi-Fi network name or disable the public SSID, as well as change your password, to reduce the likelihood of an intruder on your network.

Do not check for firmware updates

AVM’s FRITZ!Box routers come with an operating system that allows automatic updates, which is very useful because it simplifies their management, but not all routers have this feature. When installing and configuring the Wi-Fi network, we may have installed a new router, and that this has been in storage for months or even a few years from the store where we bought it.

During that time probably received at least one or two updates important firmware releases that may not only add new features but also fix bugs, issues, and security flaws. If you don’t update your router’s firmware, you’ll lose all of that and have an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Don’t hesitate, update your router and take the opportunity to customize everything you need.

Placing the router in an inappropriate location

There are many variants of this error and all of them have different severity. So, for example, there is a case where we place the router in an area that is too far away, but also a case where, even though it is closer, surrounded by obstacles and objects this can cause interference that ultimately destroys performance. We may also have placed it “well”, but in an area that is not quite adequate to our needs.

Router placement is a very important decision and should not be taken lightly. Think about what things you will need to connect with a cable, where you want your Wi-Fi connection to reach. If you want to cover a wide range and reach every room in a standard house, it is ideal to find a central and elevated location that is also free of obstacles and nearby sources of interference. In case you want to go one or two floors higher or lower, I regret to inform you that you will not do miracles and that in both cases it would be ideal to resort to a PLC with a Wi-Fi repeater.
