NASA intends to fund the design, construction, testing and flight of a large-scale demonstrator with a well-designed airframe configuration and development of related technologies. According to the message, the agency’s project aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in aviation and ensure the competitiveness of the United States in aircraft construction.

It is noted that NASA is targeting technologies for narrow-body (single-aisle) aircraft, which account for almost half of the world’s aviation emissions.

“With this ambitious new project, together with the American industry, we will usher in a new era of breakthrough innovation that will make the global aviation industry cleaner, quieter and more sustainable,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

The agency plans to complete tests by the end of the 2020s so that a new generation of single-aisle aircraft will be on the market in the 2030s.

NASA hopes to select at least one industry partner by early 2023 to enter into an agreement with the Armstrong Flight Research Center in California. Such an agreement would provide funding for the project and access to NASA facilities.

An industrial partner will design, build, test and fly the demonstrator, and NASA will receive data on airframe configuration and related technologies.
