The Krab self-propelled howitzer is a Polish self-propelled howitzer mounted on a tracked chassis and has a turret arrangement. In the front part of the hull there is a power plant and a control compartment, a combat compartment in the middle and rear of the hull. In this regard, the machine is identical to modern self-propelled guns of similar caliber: the British AS-90, the Korean K9 Thunder or the German PzH 2000.

The maximum speed of the ACS on asphalt roads is 67 km/h, on flat terrain – up to 30 km/h, off-road the maximum speed is reduced to 15 km/h.

Tactical and technical characteristics of Krab self-propelled guns:

  • Caliber — 155mm NATO
  • The barrel length is 52 caliber.
  • Rate of fire 6 shots per minute
  • The effective firing range is 30 km.
  • The maximum firing range is 40 km.
  • charging separately
  • Power reserve — 400 km
  • Maximum speed 67 km/h
  • Average speed 30 km/h
  • Crew – 5 people
  • Weight – 48 tons

The power plant of this ACS is a German MT 881 Ka-500 diesel engine. The main means of fire of the Polish howitzer is a 155 mm cannon with a barrel length of 52 calibers. The maximum rate of fire of the gun is 6 shots per minute. Burst firing is available – the self-propelled gun can fire 3 rounds in 10 seconds. At the same time, the practical rate of fire in combat conditions at which the crew can work effectively for a long time is 2 shots per minute.

AHS Krab electronic systems include:

  • FiN 3110L ground navigation and topographic reference system + GPS + odometer;
  • TOPAZ fire control system (tower control computer, guidance computer and commander’s ballistic computer);
  • FONET internal and external communication system (digital VHF radio station type RRC 9311AP and personal radio station for functional personnel);
  • devices for day and night surveillance of the driver and commander;
  • warning and self-defense system Obra-3 SSP-1;
  • direct aiming;
  • MVRS-700 SCD ballistic radar.

In addition to the main armament, a large-caliber 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun and 2×4 smoke grenade launchers of 81 mm caliber were installed on the Krab self-propelled gun turret. The ammunition of the howitzer is 40 shells, 29 of which are stored in the turret of the combat vehicle and 11 in the vault. The time to bring the ACS into combat position is about 30 seconds. This is how long it takes for a self-propelled howitzer to change position after a shot.
