A team of scientists has developed a clinically applicable deep learning system to predict the risk of glaucoma and its likelihood of developing in the future, based on original color fundus photographs (FOD).

Estimation of disease onset refers to assessment of risk of developing glaucomatous optic neuropathy within 3-5 years based on baseline color FOD, while estimation of disease progression refers to assessment of risk of progression of vision. AI-based models were developed based on the FOD of more than 9,000 patients.

To estimate the incidence of glaucoma, data were obtained from a sample population at the time of screening, which more accurately reflects the distribution of glaucoma incidence in the population and increases the reliability of the AI ​​model.
