A team of Chinese scientists at Sun Yat-sen University’s Center for Ophthalmology has successfully used artificial intelligence (AI) to develop models to predict the onset and progression of glaucoma.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Xinhua.

A team of scientists has developed a clinically applicable deep learning system to predict the risk of glaucoma and its likelihood of developing in the future, based on original color fundus photographs (FOD).

Estimation of disease onset refers to assessment of risk of developing glaucomatous optic neuropathy within 3-5 years based on baseline color FOD, while estimation of disease progression refers to assessment of risk of progression of vision. Field changes in glaucoma patients over the next 3-5 years based on a similar photograph.

AI-based models were developed based on the FOD of more than 9,000 patients.

To estimate the incidence of glaucoma, data were obtained from a sample population at the time of screening, which more accurately reflects the distribution of glaucoma incidence in the population and increases the reliability of the AI model.

The scientific paper highlights that the study demonstrates the possibility of applying deep learning algorithms for early detection and prediction of glaucoma progression.

As reported by Ukrinform, experts from the Security Space Research Fund of Ukraine, the National Institute for Strategic Studies and the Artificial Intelligence Development Expert Committee launched a project. recommendations on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the development of public administration infrastructure in the field of artificial intelligence. .
