Researchers at the University of Southern Denmark (SUD) have made a drone capable of self-charging on high-voltage wires. The device is designed to inspect high voltage networks without turning off the power, as well as to ensure continuous operation without constant returns to the base of operation. The first test of the drone was carried out in the city of Odense, Denmark.

Drone autonomy increases over time, with models like the DJI Mavic 3 Cine reaching 46 minutes of flight time. However, this autonomy is not enough if we consider places of wide extent. Thinking about this logistics of operations, Danish researchers have created a drone capable of moving along high voltage wires. In the video below, we can follow the moment when the drone is connected to the electrical network to start the charging process.

The tests were carried out in Odense, Denmark, on a 150 kV high voltage network. Emad Samuel Malki Ebeid, one of the SPD researchers, noted that the trials were considered successful. “With this, we can have a swarm of autonomous drones to place sensors and check wires. Currently, they need to be turned off and checked by people using elevators and helicopters.”

The companies and several think tanks have formed a coalition to explore how drones can be used to help operate more than 7,000 kilometers of high-voltage networks scattered across Denmark. The results presented by the university are only the first step in this project.. In addition to being able to boot, researchers are looking for a device that can make physical contact with structures to install sensors.

The practicality and variety of new features of self-loading drones are very interesting. Thus, it is possible to automate several workplaces, which will further increase the efficiency of numerous projects. At the moment, it will be some time before we see such a model appear on the market.
