Censoring peaceful protesters isn’t the only reason governments deliberately shut down the internet in 2022, but researchers say that’s the goal. It costs the world economy the most.
Report details
- According to a Top10VPN report, the cost of government-ordered internet outages will cost the global economy more than $10 billion in 2022, nearly double what it cost last year.
- It is also worth remembering that only half of 2022 is over – there are still six months.
- It will cost $8.77 billion Russia is the biggest problem of the world economy. The shutdown of social networks there began shortly after the occupation of Ukraine and is aimed at limiting peaceful protests and freedom of the press by blocking access to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, among other things.
- Other reasons include efforts by Sudan, Syria and Algeria to prevent students from failing academic exams. These “no conflict shutdowns” cost no less – $6 million a day is lost in some places.
The source states that Top10VPN typically tracks major government outages in only 16 countries and measures losses on a daily basis. So, if Top10VPN’s 2022 monitoring is as incomplete as in previous years, internet outages are likely to cost the global economy more than reported.
