NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has collected 250 grams of soil samples from the asteroid Bennu.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Kyodo News.

The probe arrived at Bennu in December 2018 and conducted research there before landing on the asteroid’s surface in October 2020 to collect rock samples.

NASA aimed to collect samples weighing at least 60 grams, but managed to get 250 grams. The collected material should be delivered to Earth in September 2023.

It was noted that the American agency plans to transfer some of the collected samples to the Japanese space agency, which had previously shared some of the material obtained from the Ryugu asteroid by the Hayabusa2 probe, which returned to Earth in December 2020.

The asteroids are believed to be remnants of the early formation of the Solar System, about 4.6 billion years ago. Their work is expected to provide new insights into the formation of the Solar System and the origin of life.

As reported by Ukrinform, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) took pictures of the asteroid Bennu.
