Netflix introduced surround sound for all platforms to improve the sound quality of its original movie library. This feature should offer a more immersive audio experience, especially for users who use headphones to watch a TV show or movie.

Sennheiser and Netflix collaborated to develop an enhanced surround sound output that can be streamed through stereo speakers or headphones without the need for additional hardware or professional surround sound setup.

Instead of stereo output on the Netflix platform, content that supports it will now use Sennheiser’s Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio format. Ambeo uses any surround sound or Dolby Atmos audio tracks available for the selected content to create a more immersive stereo profile.

Netflix also supports Apple’s surround sound on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad devices to deliver rich surround sound with 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos sound. To listen to surround sound on a compatible Apple device, the Streaming Quality setting must be set to High or Auto.

This feature will be available to all Netflix subscribers and will also work on devices that do not normally support surround sound. Currently, the library of content using Netflix’s spital audio feature is limited, but users can search for spatial audio in the search bar to get the full list of shows and movies with spital audio. Some of the early picks include Red Notice, The Witcher, Locke & Key, The Adam Project, and Stranger Things 4.
