Court rules in favor of Nokia in 4G/5G patent dispute

A German court in Mannheim ruled in favor of Nokia in a 4G/5G patent dispute against OPPO. The lawsuit resulted from a glitch in the discussions between Nokia and OPPO over 4G (LTE) and 5G patents. After filing lawsuits in four countries, OPPO has filed lawsuits against Nokia in nine countries. Oppo said the lawsuit filed by Nokia was shocking.

The decision of the German district court is the first on the contested patents. Nokia sued OPPO over 9 standard basic patents (SEP) and five utility patents in three district courts in Germany. Nokia is the leader in the 5G SEP segment, with a massive investment of approximately 129 billion euros ($130.3 billion). He has a ton of patents in his field and has gotten a few deals recently. Daimler and Lenovo are among the last competitors of Nokia to reach an agreement with the Finnish company.

Mannheim District Court ordered Nokia to ceasefire against OPPO. This means OPPO and OnePlus devices are banned in Germany. OPPO’s appeal against the decision was dismissed by a judge, who described the Chinese firm as an unwanted licensee. Nokia’s lawyers in the Mannheim case were selected from the teams that won both the Daimler and Lenovo cases. Currently, Nokia licenses its name for consumer products only. However, it has proven itself in the past thanks to a series of industry-leading patents. Source
