Microsoft warns of problems with search in Outlook on Windows 11

Microsoft has updated the Office documentation to include a notification about a new issue in Outlook. According to the company’s findings, Outlook Desktop users on Windows 11 may experience issues with the built-in search. The program may not show recent emails in search results.

The error affects POP, IMAP, and offline Exchange accounts that use the native Windows Search service to index and search email. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 and linked Exchange accounts are not affected.

Microsoft is currently investigating the new bug. Meanwhile, users can fix the problem with a workaround. Microsoft recommends turning off Windows Desktop Search to force Outlook to switch to the built-in search service. Here’s how to do this:

  1. click Win + R and enter regedit.
  2. go HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows and choose Edit > New > Key.
  3. Rename the new key to: Windows Search.
  4. choose Windows search key and click Edit > New > DWORD Value.
  5. Rename the new value to: PreventIndexingOutlook and press Enter.
  6. Open PreventIndexingOutlook and change its value to . one. use 0to cancel the changes
  7. click OKto save changes
  8. Close Registry Editor and restart Outlook.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that Microsoft has advised users to disable the Windows Search Service to fix problems with Outlook Desktop. A similar situation happened last year for those who wanted to pull the trigger and try their first pre-installation of Windows 11.
