Known as the “Recorder”, Comet 2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) will make its closest approach to our planet on July 14.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Watchers.

Comet 2017 K2 (PanSTARRS), dubbed the ‘Recorder’, will approach Earth on July 14, 2022, and then arrive near Mars orbit (the closest point to the Sun) on December 19. The comet is the record holder because it was already active when it was discovered in 2017 under the faint light of the distant Sun.”

Officially named C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS), also known as K2, this comet began to develop a 130,000 km wide halo around its core in May-June 2017, when it was 16 AU, or 2.4 billion km from the Sun.

He points out that it’s best to observe the comet with a telescope at this time, as from July 13 it will be less visible due to the Super Moon (full moon coinciding with perigee).

K2’s orbit indicates that the comet emerged from the Oort Cloud, a spherical region about one light-year in diameter believed to contain hundreds of billions of comets.

As of January 11, 2022, the comet was within 5 AU (750 million km/) of Earth.
