DJI QuickTransfer: What is file transfer technology and how does it work

Quick reading

  • Technology enables fast, cable-free copying
  • The connection process is fast and works well
  • Four drones currently support QuickTansfer: Mavic 3, Mavic 3 Cine, Mini 3 Pro, and Mini 2.
  • Speeds up to 60MB/s with Mavic 3 and 25MB/s with Mini 3 Pro
  • No Solution for Windows PC Technology

Some of the drones DJI connection technology support DJI QuickTransfer, which aims to speed up the process of copying files stored on the drone to a smartphone or tablet. In consumer drone models, the technology first appeared with mini 2now also in models Mavic 3 and Mini 3 Pro. In this article, I will talk about this technology, how to set up, compatible models, and also show speed tests with some drones using the same files for copying, including copy tests with a “normal” process via cable, as well as with copying through DJI. Quick translation.

DJI QuickTransfer Uses Wi-Fi Connection Between Smartphone and Aircraft to Transfer Files Faster

If you haven’t checked mine DJI Mavic 3 drone review, feature-rich and currently the most complete DJI model when it comes to consumer drones, click this link to access. Mavic 3 supports fast transfer at top speed so far, reaching 60 MB/s.

How copying via DJI QuickTransfer works

The concept of copying is based on Wi-Fi connection of a smartphone/tablet with a drone or technology-enabled device, all done without cables and without the need to connect a remote control. Another detail is that to create a copy, you need to use the DJI app, and in the case of drones, the DJI Fly app. At the moment, this technology is not present in other types of company products, but this is a trend that will appear in the future.

No remote control is required as the process connects the smartphone to the drone via Wi-Fi.

Once the connection is established, which is offered on the application screen when determining the compatibility of the technology with the product being used, any copy of the files will automatically use this process, which is much faster than the traditional method.

It is worth noting that, at least for now, the technology is only available on devices that support the DJI Fly app, i.e. Android and iOS. You cannot use QuickTransfer, for example, on a computer running Windows, MAC OS, or Linux.

Drones with QuickTransfer

The name QuickTransfer was given by DJI, but it is nothing more than a Wi-Fi connection between the drone and a smartphone / tablet, so other manufacturers may also have a similar solution.

Speaking of DJI drones, the first model to support QuickTransfer was the Mini 2, which offers a maximum transfer rate of 20MB/s. The Mini 3 Pro also supports technology up to 25MB/s, already in a more simplified process than Mini 2. Finally, the Mavic 3 series drones also provide support up to 60MB/s, very high speed and important for the product, which records high quality images and therefore creates very large files, especially Mavic 3 Cine through Apple ProRes format with much larger files, up to 8 times larger than traditional.

  • DJI Mini 2 = 20MB/s
  • DJI Mini 3 Pro = 25 MB/s (some documents say 30 MB/s)
  • DJI Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine = 60 MB/s

As for Autel Robotics, the EVO NANO and LITE series models also support fast file copy technology with transfer rates up to 20MB/s.

Setting up DJI QuickTransfer

The setup process for DJI drones is very simple, especially the latest models like the Mavic 3 and Mini 3 Pro, with a connection message that pops up on the app screen as soon as it detects a technology-enabled drone, in this case. mentioned, just be in touch. On the Mini 2, you need to press a button to start the connection process.

QuickTransfer to DJI Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3

As already mentioned, with the latest models that support this technology, the connection process is quite simple. If the aircraft is turned on and the controller is turned off, a message will appear in the app asking you to connect. If the controller is turned on during normal flight, when entering the gallery, the button switches the connection to QuickTransfer mode.

Below are images of the two available scenarios. Depending on the model of the DJI product and smartphone/tablet, the messages may vary slightly, but they are very direct and clear.

This image will appear when the aircraft is turned on and the controller is turned off. Just click “Switch” to start the installation process, which is quite simple.

Quick Transfer to DJI Mini 2

On the Mini 2 drone, press the button on the bottom of the drone to start the pairing process. When the aircraft is turned on, hold down the button for 2 seconds and a message will appear on the DJI Fly app that the Mini 2 has been detected, just follow the instructions to establish a connection.

QuickTransfer: Drone Connection Failed

If for some reason the app is unable to connect, a message will appear on the screen. Scroll down the message, where the password and the name of the Wi-Fi network created by the drone will appear, on your smartphone, search for this network, request the connection, and enter the password. Remember that the created network is in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. After this process everything should work.

File copy tests on different drones

I have talked a lot about these technologies in my drone reviews, and there is nothing better than showing practical and real data by copying the same files to different drone models, showing how this type of technology can make a difference, especially for professional use or for those who travel and need files quickly and conveniently on your smartphone.

File copy speed from Mavic 3 can exceed 60MB/s as shown in the figure below.

The chart below shows copy tests in various scenarios with DJI Air 2S drones (which do not support QuickTransfer), as well as Mini 3 Pro which supports QuickTransfer at a maximum speed of 25MB/s, and Mavic 3 which reaches 60MB/s. or even the majority. In these graphs, you can clearly see the practical difference of this technology and how much it can reduce the copy time for the mobile phone or tablet you are using.

Some drones also support USB mode, when connecting the aircraft with a USB cable

Conclusion on DJI QuickTransfer

As you can see, depending on how you use your DJI drone, having QuickTransfer or similar technology in a competing model can be a buying factor as it provides real benefits depending on the use. I think this is especially important nowadays for those who travel a lot and use their smartphone as a means of editing and sharing, and certainly many people do this because of the ease of doing everything on their smartphone.

QuickTransfer technology should be applied to every new DJI release, perhaps even other types of products such as action cameras.

I’ve had no problems with my connection models with the models I’ve tested, at the moment there are three that support this technology. For those wondering why the Air 2S doesn’t support QuickTransfer despite being released after the Mini 2, the answer is most likely due to the fact that the Air 2S shares almost everything from the Mavic Air 2, including the internals. which is a shame. since the Air 2S has become a very popular drone for quality photography enthusiasts.

As for the criticism, I think that there is still a lack of software that bridges the Wi-Fi connection in Windows, which allows you to copy files directly from the drone to the computer without using cables, as with Android devices. iOS via DJI Fly. I remember that some drones need to open their arms to give access to the USB connection, which allows you to connect the drone directly to a computer to copy files that are on the card or the drone’s internal memory.
