The first modernized multiple rocket launcher (MSR) M270A2 enters service with the US Army. Defense24 received a fire control system combined with the improved system on the tracked chassis, HIMARS MLRS.
M270A2 received an enlarged cabin with additional armor, providing protection against explosive devices. The modernized MLRS is also equipped with an improved undercarriage and a Joint Fire Control System (CFCS). The VTA-903T engine gave way to a new 600-horsepower power unit.
The MLRS will be able to use M30/M31 guided missiles as well as M26 and M28 unguided shells. The M270A2 launcher will also be able to fire ATACMS tactical missiles.
The US Army ordered the modernization of 160 M270 MLRS in fiscal 2017. The modernized MLRS will be used until 2050. The M270A2 and HIMARS remain the US Army’s primary missile systems.
