Turkey has declared a competition to develop an engine for a fighter jet.

Turkish Defense Industry Presidency announced the tender for turbofan engine development. Defense News reported that the promising power unit is designed for fighters of the fifth generation TF-X.

It was noted that the applications for participation in the competition were made by Turkish companies Tusaş Motor Industry and TRMotor. According to İsmail Demir, head of the Turkish Defense Industry Corporation, TAEC, formed by Turkey’s Kale Group and British manufacturer Rolls-Royce, is also participating in the competition.

Demir listed the requirements for the program participants. The engine must be produced in Turkey, intellectual property rights will belong to the republic. In addition, the manufacturer should not limit obtaining export licenses.

It is believed that the TAEC engine will allow the TF-X to fly at an altitude of more than 12 thousand kilometers. The aircraft will be able to develop speeds up to Mach 1.8. According to Demir, TAEC’s proposal meets all criteria except the transfer of intellectual property rights. If Turkey cannot reach an agreement with Rolls-Royce, engine development will continue independently.
