Extremely intense attacks by Russian hacker groups have been recorded in Latvia for more than a month.
This is reported by LSM with reference to Yanis Sarts, director of the Riga NATO Strategic Communications Center (Stratcom COE), according to Ukrinform.
Possible reasons for the unprecedented cyberattacks at Stratcom COE, the intention of the Latvian authorities to demolish the Soviet monument to the “liberators” in Riga; Latvia’s active assistance to Ukraine, which thwarted Russian aggression; As well as the upcoming parliamentary elections in Latvia.
According to Sarts, the purpose of DDoS attacks is to make some sites and electronic services unavailable to residents, and this may be an attempt to show the strength of the Russian Federation and the weakness of Latvia.
He noted that Latvia’s infrastructure has proven itself in this situation, the population of the country did not notice the attacks. “We know about them (attacks – ed.), the infrastructure is laid to counter it, and as we’ve seen, the people have been prepared too – but of course, there can always be cases where something penetrates all these protective layers, and something will happen anyway. But from an effort standpoint, For something to work, they’re going to have to put in a lot more effort,” said Sarts.
Given the rapid parliamentary elections in the country (in Latvia, the acceptance of candidate lists began on 13 July, the elections will be held on 1 October), the head of Stratcom COE has heard that authorities have listened to the warnings and has since abandoned the idea of electronic voting, but despite modern security more vulnerable.
