According to research firm Gartner, 72 million personal computers were sold worldwide in the second quarter of this year. This is 12.6% less than the same period in 2021. This applies to desktops, laptops, and ultraportable systems. iPad is not listed.
Researchers explain the drop in sales volume for several reasons. These are geopolitical events and economic reasons and problems with logistics and the shortage of semiconductor products and sanctions against Russia for many companies leaving the country. PC sales fell the most in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
At the same time, it is emphasized that the decline in the second quarter only accelerated compared to the first, while it is emphasized that this is explained by “prolonged geopolitical instability”. Also among the reasons is declining demand for Chromebook laptops.
According to the second quarter results, Lenovo was the largest manufacturer, selling almost 18,000 computers and currently occupying 24.8% of the market. Compared to last year, its sales fell 12.5%. HP (13.5k sold, volumes down 27.5%) and Dell (13.3k computers sold, volumes down 5.2%) also broke into the top 3. These companies occupied 18.8% and 18.5% of the market, respectively.
