The MacBook Air M2 was – for my taste – the most remarkable news presented by Apple at the last conference WWDC 2022. With a new design, an attractive appearance, a good screen, a huge autonomy, the usual excellent finishes in Apple and the new Chip M2 as the main engine, it is destined to become with a reference in the segment of ultraportable devices.

In line with the launch date, which we assumed is today, July 15, some media have published analyzes of this model and generally with good reviews. Except for one of its parts: the internal storage of the basic version. It’s something that’s already happened in the new MacBook Pro 13 and confirmed by Air reviews.

Data transfer results of the 256GB SSD installed in the MacBook Air M2 (1,450 Mbytes per second) it’s half of what the excellent 512GB SSD configuration offers. This is apparently because the base version only uses one NAND chip for the two upper units.

An Apple spokesperson said The Verge in a statement which “These new computers use new, higher-density NAND that offers 256GB of storage on a single chip. While the 256GB SSD benchmarks may show a difference compared to the previous generation, the performance of these M2-based systems for real-world activities is even faster.”.

Good. That’s what Apple says. Performance tests say otherwise… And anyway It is not unusual for the new generation to slow down a component such as an SSD, the performance of which has not stopped growing in recent years. It is true that, as we have already told you several times, synthetic tests do not tell everything about the real performance of the computer.

Also, the performance hit would only be noticeable for performance-intensive workloads like compiling software or working on 4K video projects, and those types of users will still need higher storage capacities with faster chips.

In any case, the recommendation here is obvious to every user. The MacBook Air M2 looks great and is sure to be a bestseller, but if I were to buy one I would definitely go for the 512 Gbyte version, which, in addition to more speed and capacity, adds a few more GPU cores, which are always handy. The price of this configuration is 1,869 euros in Spain and it is now available in four different colors. More information and purchase | Manzana.
