Many users believe that they have a good Internet connection speed, but in reality they are not fully aware of what can be considered as such and they do not always meet the minimum recommended levels depending on the use they are going to provide.

This is without a doubt the most important key to keep in mind when deciding whether or not we have a good internet connection speed, the use we provide to itbecause obviously we don’t need the same connection speed to the Internet to browse the Internet and check e-mails rather than playing high-definition multimedia content.

Despite this differentiation that we indicated in the previous paragraph, however, we can establish base that sets the minimum level which can be considered a good internet connection in general, i.e. in any of the most common use cases. This minimum would be 100 Mb/s down and at least 50 Mb/s up, so values that when converted to MB/s correspond to 12.5 MB/s and 6.25 MB/s.

Why do I need a different internet connection speed depending on what I’m doing?

It is really easy, as bandwidth consumption changes. For example, for something as simple as browsing the Internet, checking email, and using instant messaging applications, an Internet connection speed of 5 Mbps would be sufficient, as the bandwidth consumption of these activities would be minimal.

However, if you will be using the Internet connection for video calls, playing multimedia content and playing online games, you will need it at a speed of 40 Mbps for a good experience and in case you will be playing HD media content on multiple devices at the same time and downloading quite large files at least 100 Mbps which we saw earlier would be the recommended level.

In general, going over 100 Mbps is not necessary unless we encounter very specific cases. There is more than enough for a man who lives alone, but for a family environment with two or more people, it may be necessary to exceed this number, especially if we will play multimedia content in UHD on several devices, if we will download very large files, and if we will have several gaming computers running online games. In these cases, a 300 Mbps connection would be sufficient, but if the family consists of several members, we may need an Internet connection speed 500 Mbps or more.

Does it make sense to have a connection greater than 500 Mbps?

For a home user, the truth is that generally no, because they offer huge bandwidth that we won’t really need, except in very specific cases (when many people in the same house use a single connection). However, this must be taken into account if we download very large files very often yes, it would be nice to have a higher speed.

In my case I have to download and install very heavy games quite often, it is essential for me to have a very fast internet connection as it makes a huge difference in the speed at which these games download. My internet connection exceeds 900 Mb/s, which corresponds to 112.5 MB/s, a figure that allows me to download games weighing tens of gigabytes in a few minutes. If I had a 5 Mbps connection, 0.62 MB/s, it may take many hours or even a day or two, depending on the difficulty of the game.

Upload speed is also important, but the bandwidth we need may not be as much as the download speed. unless we are doing challenging tasks, such as streaming or fairly frequent uploading of large files to the cloud, we will not have a problem even with relatively low values (compared to download values). Note that if you have a slow internet connection speed, you may suffer from one of these problems.
