At the end of May, Google Authenticator received its first update in a year, hiding your two-factor authentication codes until you click a button to reveal them. An update to the app this week revealed that Google has decided to remove the feature.
“Tap to reveal PIN” has been removed in version 5.20R4 of Google Authenticator, now you can immediately see all two-factor authentication codes in a list when you open the app.
Most likely, the Tap to Show feature was Google’s attempt to add another layer of security to make it harder for those close to you to look at your phone’s screen. On the other hand, the codes already change every 30 seconds, so it’s unclear how effective this measure is.
Also, this update never appeared on iOS. It asks for Face/Touch Authentication before showing the codes there.
