The project, called Skynet, should be implemented within the next two years.
The 264 km long airline will connect the UK cities of Reading, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Coventry and Rugby.
The technology uses ground-based sensors installed along the highway that provide real-time visibility into where the drones are in the airspace. This data is then analyzed by a traffic management system – a type of air traffic control system for drones – that guides them along routes and avoids collisions between them.
Skynet is said to be part of the UK government’s £273m aviation financing package.
Other projects that have received funding include drones to deliver mail to the Isles of Scilly and medicine across Scotland.
As Ukrinform reports, the American company Amazon has announced that it plans to start delivering ordered packages with drones soon.
