The Hubble Space Telescope captured a photograph of the gravitational lensing galaxy SGAS J143845+145407 in space.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by the observatory.

Gravitational lensing occurs when a large celestial body, such as a galaxy cluster, causes enough space-time curvature to cause the light path around it to be noticeably bent by a lens. Accordingly, the body that causes the distortion of light is called a gravitational lens, and the distorted background object is called a “lens”.

Gravitational lensing can produce multiple images of the parent galaxy, as seen in this image, or of a background object that looks like a warped arc or even a ring.

Another important consequence of this lensing distortion is the expansion of objects, which allows astronomers to observe objects that would otherwise be too far away or too cloudy to be seen.

As Ukrinform reports, the NASA/ESA Hubble space telescope photographed the globular star cluster Terzan 2 in the constellation Scorpio.
