With a strong thermal wave reaching the state Texaslocated in the southern United States, Tesla asks residents of the region not to carry batteries their electric cars in the hot sun. The recommendation is mainly for peak hours, when the state’s electricity grid can be overloaded.
The manufacturer has been on the radar of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for several years.
Tesla’s inquiry comes along with recommendations Texas Electrical Reliability Board (ERCOT), an energy company operating in Texas, urged residents to conserve electricity during the recent heat wave. Thus the company Elon Musk issued warnings to Tesla customers and vehicle users advising them not to charge their vehicles from from 15:00 to 20:00.
It’s worth noting that this Tesla-recommended time is different from that given by ERCOT, which advised Texas residents to avoid running large appliances between the hours of 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The idea is for customers to leave their electric vehicles unplugged during peak hours to avoid blackouts at key points in the city where energy consumption is high. The heatwave is also depriving the US state of wind power, which generates about a quarter of its electricity.
The statement says: “The heat wave is expected to affect the network in Texas in the coming days. The network operator recommends avoiding charging during peak hours between 3 pm and 8 pm, if possible, to help with the state’s demand management efforts.”
This is not an isolated incident, as Tesla itself issued an alert to Tesla EV users over Mother’s Day weekend in May of this year, asking them to charge their vehicles during off-peak hours.
In addition to Tesla, some bitcoin miners in Texas are also shutting down some of their operations this time around to avoid congestion caused by high temperatures.
