Ever since WhatsApp added statuses a few years ago, the only way other people could interact with them was to reply with a text message. Now we know the app is working on a new way to respond to situations: quick reactions with emojis.

A few months ago WaBetaInfo discovered the reactions to statuses in WhatsApp Desktop, and now it’s doing the same in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, which shows that the work is in progress. In practice, it will allow us reply to a situation with an emojiIt’s similar to how you would reply to stories on Facebook or Instagram.

A picture is worth a thousand words and an emoji is probably worth a few dozen words. As we see in the screenshot, we will have a new option to respond to a situation. After swiping up to reply, besides having bottom box to type whatever text you want, Reply quickly by tapping one of the eight emojis appearing in the middle of the screen

Currently the options are 😍, 😂, 😯, 😢, 🙏, 👏, 🎉 and 💯. By clicking on one of these, you probably will be sent in response to the status creator’s chat, there is no more. It’s a practical process similar to how quick replies to Instagram and Facebook stories, also owned by Meta, work.

The novelty is contained in the WhatsApp Beta code for Android version 2.22.16.10, but not yet active for users. Given that it’s seen on both WhatsApp Desktop and its mobile app, it’s not unreasonable to think it’s coming in a few weeks, although it’s not clear at all.
