Against the background of the slowdown in the smartphone market, according to the latest data, Samsung continued to lead. Research firm Canalys has announced that Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments in the second quarter of 2022.

In the second quarter of 2022, Samsung managed to sell approximately 60 million smartphones and capture 21% of the global smartphone market. For comparison, the company’s figures last year (Q2 of 2021) were lower, with a market share of 18%. The South Korean firm has been successful in the market thanks to strong sales of the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy A series.

Approximately 275 million smartphones have been shipped worldwide; this figure is 9% lower than in the first quarter of 2022, when approximately 300 million units were shipped. Apple became the second largest smartphone brand with a 17% market share in this period. The company has managed to outperform most other Android OEMs thanks to the strong sales of the iPhone 13 series.

Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo struggled in the second quarter of 2022 due to declining sales in the Chinese market. Xiaomi is in third place with 14% market share, while OPPO (includes Realme and OnePlus numbers) and Vivo (includes iQOO sales) have 10% and 9% market share respectively. These Chinese firms experienced double-digit sales declines compared to the second quarter of 2021.

Canalys Research analyst Runar Bjørhovde said:Economic difficulties, weak demand and inventory formation prompted suppliers to quickly rethink their portfolio strategies for the remainder of 2022. The oversupplied mid-range is an open segment for vendors to focus on tuning out new launches, as budget-conscious consumers shift their device purchases to the lower-end.” Source
