The Dell XPS 13 Plus is one of the best ultraportables on the market. And besides, it’s one of the few models that are equally well supported for Windows and Linux. It was not for nothing that it was the model that ten years ago was chosen to launch as part of “Project Sputnik”, a pioneering combination of Linux pre-installed on a high-end commercial laptop.
The latest version of this Dell XPS 13 Plus was presented at CES in January with Windows 11 pre-installed in the general model, but also with Linux and specifically with Ubuntu 20.04 in a special Developer Edition, which is well known to lovers of the free system..
Now, Dell and Canonical are announcing the release of a new version with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS in August. An undoubted leap forward that also stands out for being the first certified OEM PC for this version of Ubuntu with long-term support. Of course, buyers of previous versions will be able to upgrade easily and with official standard support until 2027.
Dell XPS 13 Plus, the latest from Ubuntu and much more
Dell has updated its benchmark ultralight with a minimalist, modern design. It has eliminated the two-tone carbon fiber interior trim of the classic XPS model and created a simpler tone-on-tone design that combines exterior aluminum trim with an interior of the same material available in two colors, platinum or graphite.
The Dell XPS 13 Plus takes advantage of its full size to mount a keyboard with large keys, the top range now includes a capacitive touch experience, and introduces a touchpad as another cool new feature. the transparent glass touch it offers tactile feedback.
Its screen retains the quality and capabilities of previous versions, p four panels with a diagonal of 13.4 inches and the virtually borderless Infinity Edge design, varying in resolution from FHD to 4K with touch technology, through OLED with a resolution of 3.5K (3456 x 2160 pixels), HDR500 support and 100% DCI -P3 color gamut.
As expected, the news inside goes through the use of the new twelfth generation Core processors for laptops that Intel presented in Las Vegas, Alder Lake 28 Watt models to choose from Core i5-1240P, Core i7-1260P, Core i7-1270P and Core i7-1280P.
Its integrated graphics are Iris X on all models, while RAM options include 8, 16 or 32 GB LPDDR5 memory up to 5200 MHz Internal storage ranges from 256 Gbytes to 2 Tbytes with PCIe Gen4 Solid State Drive.
With compact dimensions, a thickness 15 mm and weight 1.24 kgit manages to offer good connectivity, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, another USB 3.2, a Killer network card for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, an HD webcam with Windows Hello support, four speakers and a 55 WHr battery.
In total. An impressive ultraportable for those of us who believe the big OEMs should offer more alternatives to Windows. The Dell XPS 13 Plus, now running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, is a great example and will be available in August starting at $1,389.
