“We created Facebook to help people stay connected and get closer to the people who matter to us. friends and family at the center of the experience‘ said Mark Zuckerberg in 2018. But the social network is moving away from that idea by changing the way posts are displayed.

In the coming week, the Facebook Home tab will no longer only show pictures and videos of your friends and family, but also will also include external content selected by an algorithm, meaning posts from creators or companies that aren’t part of your contact list. The latter is called “Recommendations to You” by Meta.

More importance for Facebook algorithms

As we mentioned above, this new section will now be powered by Facebook algorithms that take into account your activity on the social network to show you “posts that might interest you” outside of your network. Interestingly, this behavior It has more similarities with TikToksocial network of the moment, than the original Facebook.

TikTok has what is known as the “instant attraction formula” which is very effective in retaining users. The heart of this social network is its powerful recommendation algorithm. When you enter the application, the Home tab Shows you videos of people you don’t knowA combination of viral content and selected based on your interests.

So, are we dealing with a “Tiktokized” Facebook? In a way yes, but the company is gradually offering an alternative for all users who want to bypass part of the algorithm. This is a New tab called Feedswill include posts from friends, groups, and pages in chronological order.

The feeds will be something similar to the Recent tab we currently have on Facebook to see the content. chronological order however, this new option promises to be more visible and customizable. “The Posts tab will give you a way to further customize and control your experience,” Mark Zuckerberg says in a post.

Exactly, the customizable aspect of the new Feeds tab is that it allows us to select a list of friends and favorite pages, and then apply a filter to see only posts from them.

Meta, these changes will start spreading worldwide next week, but they may come early for some users. The Posts tab appears at the bottom of the Facebook app on iOS and at the top of Android.

The app’s shortcut bar where Feeds will appear will change according to the tabs you use the most. However, you will have the opportunity to anchor one of them so that its place is permanent.

Why is meta changing Facebook (and also Instagram)?

Although Facebook remains the social network with the most active users in the world, the competition is increasingly fierce. In February of this year, for the first time in its history, a user lost, and the smallest pay special attention to other users. Alternatives like Instagram, also owned by Meta, and TikTok, owned by Chinese giant ByteDanceto call even in the second case.

Recently, we have seen changes in how Meta has transformed Instagram to conquer TikTok users, for example by adding Reels and refining its algorithms, which has also had a certain impact on Facebook, its oldest social network, as there is currently a section devoted to Reels. and short videos in the home page tab.

In addition, Adam Moseri, head of Instagram, announced other changes to Instagram this Thursday, among them the merging of Videos and Reels. Very soon, when you upload a Video it will be shared as Reel. If you have a public account, this opens the door for any other user to be able to use the audio from your video to create a Remix or Reel, although you can disable this option from the app settings.

The truth is that TikTok phenomenon goes beyond Meta’s social networks. For example, YouTube launched Shorts to compete with the Chinese social network. It is also a platform that allows you to upload short vertical videos with a maximum duration of one minute. Any more changes at the door? We will know in time.
