Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google would use gold illegally mined in Brazil

Gold illegally mined from the lands of the indigenous peoples of Brazil is used Google, Amazon, Microsoft as well as Apple for the composition of its products such as smartphones and computers.

In a report published today (25) on the Repórter Brasil website, journalist Daniel Camargos denounces that illegal gold mining in the Amazon is in the way of delivering the products of the 4 largest technology companies in the world through two refineries, the Italian Himet and the Brazilian Marsam.

The report had access to documents proving the acquisition of illegally mined gold by these major technologies through refineries that are or have already suffered lawsuits in Brazilian justice related to gold mining on indigenous lands or conflicts with indigenous peoples that led to death.

The complaint is important because most of the products developed by these tech giants use gold threads in their construction. So, whether through servers in the case of Google, Amazon and Microsoft, or smartphones and computers in the case of Apple, gold is used as part of its core products at some point.

The two refineries mentioned in the report, Chimet and Marsam, have a bad reputation with Brazilian justice. Chimet, an Italian company, is under investigation by the Federal Police for receiving ore illegally mined by its suppliers for clandestine mining on Kayapo indigenous lands; the Brazilian company Marsam has as its supplier FD’Gold DTVM (distributor of securities and securities) founded by Dirceu Frederico Sobrinho, former partner of Marsam, president of Anoro (National Gold Association) and lobbyist for the legalization of mining on indigenous lands – , accused Federal Public Ministry in the purchase of gold mined from indigenous lands such as the Kayapo and Munduruku territories of Para. Keeping in mind that mining on the lands of the indigenous peoples of Brazil is unconstitutional.

Apple showed itself even before the publication of the report and has already excluded one of the companies – Marsam – from the list of suppliers. Amazon, Google and Microsoft did not deny that they had already bought from these suppliers, but did not comment on the situation.

Although they did not speak specifically on the situation, in a report submitted to the US government, the tech giants (Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Apple) showed concern and commitment to issues related to sustainability, transparency and environmental responsibility.

There are several issues that need to be discussed in relation to this issue, such as tighter verification of illegal mining, protection of indigenous lands – people who were killed because of their interest in mining – greater transparency in the entire chain, which makes prey. , buying and selling these ores. Unfortunately, in the current situation, such cases have become commonplace and difficult to fight, which is why such complaints are so important.
