American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) showed off the project for the headquarters of Chinese tech giant Alibaba. Dezeen reports that due to the shape of the façade, the building will evoke with a cloud.
The 75,000 square meter building will be built in Shanghai’s Xuhui district. It will consist of volume modules at different levels. Thanks to this form, architects compare the building to a cloud. “The figure will symbolize both Alibaba’s prominent presence in the digital space and the changing sky of innovation in the tech industry,” said office partner Scott Duncan.
The designers developed a flexible structure for column-free and multiple partitioned spaces. It will be possible to go to the terraces with nature views from the facilities for negotiations. The building will be provided with natural ventilation, a smart shading system and the arrangement of artificial lighting. The center will contribute to reducing the level of harmful emissions into the atmosphere – rainwater will be collected on the roof, and steel will be selected for construction, which is not as much waste as from other materials.
