Operation 404, a joint effort by the Brazilian police and US anti-piracy company Nagra to combat piracy and illegal IPTV services, has taken down nearly 2,000 pirated websites and apps in Brazil since its inception. Between 2019 and 2022, 1,022 websites and 720 illegal apps were shut down.

It wasn’t until 2022 that Operation 404 was already taken off the air. 226 pages and 461 applications. In the history of investigations, 2022 was the year when the largest number of pirated applications were withdrawn from circulation. Operation 404 usually does not disclose the names of retired services, so it is impossible to know which sites and applications have disappeared as a result of a police operation.

The operation is expected to continue to expand over the next few years. As part of a recent initiative that took place in June, the authorities they even searched the metaverseresulting in the removal of four illegal broadcasting channels and 90 videos.

Prize in the fight against piracy

During the first operation 404, which took place in 2019, a partnership between the international company Nagra and the Brazilian police destroyed 210 illegal websites and 100 applications. In 2020, there were 252 pirate sites and 65 apps. The third operation in 2021 removed 334 websites and 94 apps, culminating in the 2022 operation with 226 web pages and 461 apps.

Nagra’s vice president of legal affairs, Pascal Metral, says the company is working with various South American authorities to fight piracy. “Nagra has been supporting law enforcement in conducting such operations for over two decades and has a global reach for this type of activity.”.

It looks like Operation 404 will continue to remove more and more pirated websites and apps every year. In addition to continuing its expansion and the scope of the investigation, as we can see from the presence of authorities even in the metaverse. It remains to be seen whether such efforts will result in a real reduction in piracy, or whether illegal IPTV sites, apps and services will continue to pop up everywhere and evade the Brazilian police and the American anti-piracy campaign.
