Samsung will be working on a camera with a 450MP sensor. The information gained momentum after the company registered the Hexa²pixel brand for use in the production of the following handsets.
The new sensor is expected to be linked to Samsung’s next flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This is because the current Galaxy S22 Ultra is the only one in the current lineup to have a 200MP main camera, indicating a potential camera improvement for the next phone.
The possibility of the next Galaxy phone with 450MP came from a post by user Ice Universe on Twitter. Specializing in Samsung services, he said the very name given to the brand, Hexa²pixel, holds the key to the company’s next cell phone.
The new Hexa²Pixel sensor will use a new pixel separation technology to produce high quality images. Samsung is currently working with 200MP ISOCELL HP1 and ISOCELL HP3 sensors, resulting in a 16-in-1 binning that the company calls the Tetra²Pixel RGB Bayer pattern.
So Hexa²Pixel suggests that the binning of Samsung’s new camera will be 36 in 1. If the company decides to use the new sensor, it will have to tweak mobile phones so they can deliver better lens quality.
This is because cell phone sensors are smaller than conventional lenses. So a high megapixel value means that the individual pixels will also be smaller, resulting in less light being captured. To compensate for this, Samsung will have to develop a new sensor similar to the one used in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
