Thanks to artificial intelligence, the British company DeepMind Technologies Limited has deciphered the structure of more than 200 million proteins known to science to date.

As reported by Ukrinform, The New York Times reports this.

DeepMind now hopes to accelerate research into more obscure organisms and launch a new field called metaproteomics (protein identification).

“Scientists can now explore this entire database and look for patterns that were not apparent until now – correlations between species and evolutionary patterns,” said DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

It is stated that proteins first appear as chains of chemical compounds and then fold into three-dimensional shapes that determine how these molecules attach to others.

If scientists can pinpoint the structure of a particular protein, they may be able to decipher how it works.

This knowledge often plays an important role in the fight against various diseases. For example, bacteria resist antibiotics by squeezing certain proteins. If scientists can understand how these proteins work, they may be able to overcome antibiotic resistance.

In the past, determining the structure of a protein required large-scale experiments using X-rays, microscopes, and other tools available on the lab table.

As Ukrinform reported, at the beginning of February this year, the British company DeepMind Technologies Limited announced the creation of a system based on the artificial intelligence AlphaCode.
