Sony has opened beta testing for a new system software update for its PlayStation 5 game console. Beta testers now have access to long-awaited innovations such as 1440p support, structured playlists for the library, and new social features.

The new 1440p option will allow PS5 owners to choose that resolution on compatible TVs and monitors. PS5 already supports 4K displays and 1080p displays, the new option lets you view an intermediate variant. The key point is that the display itself must support 1440p output. Sony has added a new Test 1440p Output option to the Video Output settings menu to help you see if it’s right for you.

There’s also a new Gamelist feature that looks a bit like Xbox groups. Basically, it’s a way to divide games into easy-to-browse sections instead of browsing the entire library. There’s also a new function that lets you compare stereo sound with 3D sound.

Sony has also added new social features, including the option to ask friends to Screen Share to see how they’re playing, and new notifications to join a friend’s current game. You’ll also be able to send stickers and voice messages as part of parties, and view your new friends’ profiles. Source
