VMware Fusion 22H2 now lets you run Windows 11 on macOS

vmwarea well-known company for virtualization solutions, has announced that it is now possible to run Windows 11 on Macs with Intel and ARM processors through its application aimed at bitten apple computers: Fusion.

In other words, the latest release VMware Fusion 22H2, still in Preview, can now officially run Windows 11 on Macs, either on Intel or Apple Silicon architecture. This support has come due to the implementation of some necessary features in the virtualization solution to run the latest Microsoft system, while it can be highlighted here Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 support and addition of Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) for 2D graphics.

Another big new feature of VMware Fusion 22H2 for macOS is the provision of a the only binary for Intel and Apple Silicon, which eliminates the need for the user to find out what processor architecture they are using in order to download the appropriate installer. The company explains on its official blog that “organizations mass-deploying Fusion can use the same resources for existing and new Macs under management.”

running support Linux in virtual machines has also been enhanced by having added hardware 3D graphics acceleration and OpenGL 4.3 support, although this benefit requires at least version 5.19 of the kernel, which is in its final stages of development, and Mesa 22.1.3 or later. Of course, VMware warns that versions 20.04.04 and 22.04 of Ubuntu do not boot, so they are currently working on fixing the problems they found.

The latest important development in VMware Fusion 22H2 for macOS is the fast encryption mode, which is responsible for encrypting “the most critical parts of the virtual machine’s local storage” to improve performance while “providing a safe enclave for confidential data”, in addition to automatically generating and storing the encryption key .

Windows 11 has been criticized for being overly demanding, not so much in terms of performance as features included on the motherboard. Such moves have officially put teams with enough power to run it out of business, and are proving to be a hindrance to some virtualization solutions, though VMware Fusion is currently behind Parallels on the Mac spectrum.
