a new investigation Oxford University He argues that excessive alcohol consumption accelerates aging because its continued intake directly affects DNA—through the better-known telomeres—the ends of chromosomes responsible for maintaining our genetic material.

Telomeres coat the ends to prevent DNA damage, but how do you know when these protectors are frayed? According to research, a decrease in their performance occurs when telomere length is shortened; Each time a cell reproduces, 50 to 100 DNA bases are lost.

But when telomeres begin to divide and shorten, cells can no longer divide and therefore tend to die. In the past, some diseases associated with aging, such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, and coronary artery disease, were caused by shortening of telomeres.

So the researchers analyzed whether telomeres changed their structure in people with recurrent alcohol consumption. This was made possible by the study of 245,000 participants at the UK Biobank who were followed and studied for a week, in which those who were studied frequently consumed alcoholic beverages.

Oxford experts, in an observational analysis, noticed a significant association between higher alcohol intake and shorter telomere length.

Research shows that people who consume ten glasses of wine 250ml per week will age two years earlier than those who drink two glasses or maybe earlier in the same period.

“People diagnosed with alcohol use disorder had significantly shorter telomere lengths compared to controls, which equates to age-related changes between 3 and 6 years of age,” says Oxford University.

However, not everyone who drinks a little alcohol will experience these effects, as the analysis shows that they need to consume minimal amounts of alcohol to damage telomeres. However, it’s one of only two studies to suggest that consuming alcoholic beverages can accelerate aging, so experts hope to dig deeper into the study of this particular part of DNA.
