The US is considering restricting its supply of Chinese chipmaking equipment, including NAND memory chips made by China’s YMTC.

This was reported by Reuters citing knowledgeable sources, according to Ukrinform.

“This will be the United States’ first attempt to apply export control measures to Chinese memory chips production that has no specific military application, and it represents a broader view of American national security,” the publication said.

As noted, if such a step is approved, it is expected that the supply of American equipment to factories producing advanced NAND microcircuits in China will be banned. The main purpose of such a decision is Western Digital Corp and Micron Technology Inc., which together occupy about a quarter of the NAND chip market. is to protect the American manufacturers of memory chips.

It is also noted that this could harm South Korean memory chip manufacturers Samsung and SK Hynix. Specifically, Samsung has two large factories in China, and SK Hynix is in the process of acquiring Intel Corp’s NAND business in China.

NAND chips are used in consumer and other electronic devices to power the memory units of devices. Specifically, the amount of data a phone or laptop can store depends on the number of NAND chips it contains and how modern they are.
