Insider discovered a patent application for the “TikTok Music” trademark, which was filed in May and is valid only for the United States. A similar case was opened in Australia in November last year. According to the statement, the new service will allow users to purchase, play, share and download music. It will also be possible to create, share and recommend playlists, comment on music, and stream live audio and video.
What is known about the future service
Such a move by the company seems quite logical, as TikTok often promotes the popularization of tracks – they go viral after users start adding their excerpts to their short videos. That’s why ByteDance wants to monetize trending songs, giving users the opportunity to instantly listen to their favorite music without leaving the company’s service ecosystem.
It’s worth noting that ByteDance already has experience with streaming music.
In 2020, the company launched its music streaming app Resso in India, Brazil, and Indonesia.
Resso has some of the features described in the “TikTok Music” file.
The developer even uses TikTok to attract existing users to Resso: the Brazilian app includes a special button that directs users to Resso so they can listen to the full version of the song they’re interested in.
It is unclear whether ByteDance is planning to develop a new application based on Resso or is preparing something completely new.
