During the lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic, even with the apparent problem of semiconductor shortages, companies in the technology sector such as smartphones and gaming have seen a significant increase in demand for their products. Performance improvements are also expected in Samsung’s new generation of foldable devices.

Despite this decision, the South Korean manufacturer is still expects modest single-digit percentage growth for the second half of the year. The information, published exclusively by Reuters, indicates that Samsung has reduced production at the Thai Nguyen plant in Vietnam. The Thai Nguyen plant is responsible for assembling 100 million smartphones a year. Local employees claim that production lines only run three days a week compared to six days previously. The change could mean a reduction in production capacity of up to 50%, but no figures have been released yet.

Low production can lead to layoffs

It is important to note that although the production lines only operate three days a week, and sometimes four, employees don’t work overtime. There is a possibility that Samsung will move its production facilities to other factories, for example, in India or South Korea, but there is no confirmation of this information.

The findings of the international agency Reuters indicate that Samsung’s sales are not doing very well. The big problem with production cuts is that if the situation continues like this, massive layoffs are possible. This situation worries the employees of the Thai Nguyen factory. So far, Samsung has not officially commented on this matter, but remains positive that the company will continue to grow until the end of 2022.

It remains to be seen if other smartphone manufacturers in the market, such as Apple and Xiaomi, are also planning to cut mobile phone production until the end of 2022, which could significantly affect the segment.
