Promising PrSM missile for HIMARS will be able to hit ships

New promising PrSM missiles will be able to hit naval targets and fly at a range of up to 650 kilometers. The Precision Attack Missile (PrSM) is being developed to replace the MGM-140 tactical missile (ATACMS).

The PrSM is an all-weather precision guided missile that can be launched from both the M270A1 multiple rocket launcher and the M142 HIMARS MLRS. Two Precision Assault Missiles will be installed on the M142 High-Motion Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launcher.

The missile is designed to hit enemy air defense systems, missile launchers, control nodes, troop concentration areas and especially important targets on the battlefield from a distance of more than 500 kilometers. It is stated that Lockheed Martin Corporation aims to make a PrSM missile with a range of 60 to 650 kilometers.

A representative of the US Army Long Range Precision Fires (LRPF), based in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, told Naval News that the PrSM prototype consistently demonstrated the ability to fly beyond a range of 400 km. When asked about its cost, it was reported to be cheaper than ATACMS. The warhead is “an optimized unit designed to achieve the same effects as ATACMS.”

The multi-mode homing head can also be used to hit moving sea targets.

“Future additions to the Precision Strike Missile will include: capabilities to engage mobile land and sea targets; increasing lethal payloads capable of autonomously detecting, aiming and hitting moving, displaced or dispersed targets; and the possibility of increasing the flight range thanks to the air-jet engine“, the US military said.

Variants of a direct-flow air-jet engine on both solid and liquid fuel are currently under investigation. In addition, the US Army continues to develop the HIMARS unmanned surface-to-air missile defense system, and in the next few years the system will be ready for demonstration. Source
