As one of the leading suppliers of DDR4 memory, Samsung plans to lead the development of DDR5 RAM. Samsung recently posted a video on its YouTube channel about the latest features of Samsung DDR5-7200 modular technology.

Samsung’s new 512GB DDR5 memory modules enhance the multi-level stacking memory packaging technology used in the company’s latest DDR4 memory modules. The table below compares the difference between Samsung’s 4-layer DDR4 memory chips and 8-layer DDR5 chips, both of which are connected using Samsung Through Silicon Via technology.

By grinding the silicon layers, Samsung made the component crystals 40 percent thinner and similarly reduced the distance between the layers – so these much denser integrated DDR5 chipsets are actually thinner: 1.2mm versus 1.0mm. In turn, Samsung will be able to produce a stick of 512GB of RAM with 8 interconnected folded DRAM modules.

And finally, Samsung claims that its DDR5 technology is twice as fast as the previous generation, with speeds of up to 6400 Mbps. However, the increase in performance does not affect energy efficiency as Samsung DDR5 technology is 30% more energy efficient than the previous generation due to the lower voltages required for DDR5 RAM.

Samsung has stated that it will supply DDR5 RAM to data centers, smartphone and laptop manufacturers. And whether 512GB of DDR5 RAM will fall into the hands of consumers is a question that needs to be answered in the 2020s. Source
