To successfully suppress the enemy’s artillery, it is necessary to conduct a counter-battery war. However, in order to identify enemy positions from which artillery is firing, observers in forward positions can indicate the direction of fire. Therefore, there is a need for radars and early warning systems that can show artillery reconnaissance where enemy guns or mortars are with great accuracy.
Ukrainian soldiers have long been familiar with the American anti-battery radar AN/TPQ-36 and AN/TPQ-49. The first radars were transferred to Ukraine in 2016, but with the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Russia, the United States transferred even more such radars.
The main advantage of such complexes is weight, accuracy and mobility. They are installed on a pickup truck without a trailer. With their mobility and detection speed of up to 10 targets, they play an important role in suppressing Russian artillery in the line of contact.
The AN/TPQ-49 radar is installed on a vehicle, has an alternating current generator with a capacity of 5 kW and transmits the coordinates of the Russian artillery up to 20 km.
