Telegram CEO Pavel Durov launched a harsh accusation against Apple for adoption opaque policy in everything related to the process of reviewing and checking for updates, not only with regard to this as a necessary requirement for an application to reach the App Store, but also for the arrival of future updates for said applications.
These criticisms have an important reason, namely that, according to Durov, Apple was blocking the “revolutionary” update which will be a significant improvement to Telegram. In his opinion, the apple-bitten company “routinely” withholds and prevents the release of its updates, and accuses Apple of imposing a technology monopoly with this type of action.
“For example, our next update, which is poised to change the way people express themselves in news, been stuck in Apple’s “review” for two weeks, with no explanation or comment from Apple. If Telegram, one of the top 10 most popular apps worldwide, is getting this treatment, one can only imagine the trouble smaller app developers face. It’s not just demoralizing: it’s causing direct financial loss to hundreds of thousands of mobile apps around the world.”

His words are impressive and of course do not leave Apple any good, but that’s not new, that means it’s not the first time that the apple company is criticized for the policies and restrictions it applies to the App Store. At the time, Apple commented on the topic that it has about 500 experts fully dedicated to reviewing apps and updates around the world, and that they review about 100,000 apps every week. It also said that approximately 1 million requests to enter the App Store are denied.
However, this particular case is particularly controversial because Telegram competes with Apple’s iMessage service. It goes without saying that postponing a key update to a competing service without justification may constitute a presumption of unfair competition, although this would not be significant enough to land Apple in legal trouble, as there are ultimately other alternatives that create a free competition scenario with heavy control like WhatsApp and Signal.
Unfortunately, we are left in doubt know exactly what this revolutionary update Durov cites consists of, although it shouldn’t take long to find out if Apple rushes the update review and acceptance process a bit.
