A 60-year-old newspaper talked about modern smartphones

A Redditor published a newspaper clipping in 1963 that predicted that people could put their phones in their pockets in the future. The author of the post quite accurately described our modernity.

The first telephone devices that you can easily carry with you began to appear in the 90s. To a man in 1963, it most likely seemed like a fantasy. A note titled “In the future you will be able to carry a phone in your pocket” sounded like an American of those days, “In the future you will be able to reach Mars in four hours”.

But the 1963 text states that cell phones aren’t a thing in the near future. The author correctly assumed that such devices would allow, for example, both to search and to view images.

But this isn’t the first prediction in the history of smartphones. In 1926, Nikola Tesla proposed that one day people would be able to communicate in real time through devices that could fit securely in a vest pocket (note that such a pocket would probably still be too small for modern smartphones).
