PCI-SIG confirms Samsung 990 PRO, the pinnacle in PCIe 5.0 SSD

The Samsung 990 PRO has appeared on the PCI-SIG group list, confirming that it will be one of the first new generation SSDs which will reach the market.

PCIe 5.0 SSDs are on the verge of candy, and the launch of Intel’s new Rocket Lake processor platforms and what’s coming from AMD this quarter under the ZEN 4 architecture should mark their definitive debut.

Samsung is the world’s largest seller of SSD drives and it is clear that it will be one of the first to launch units that, in the M.2 format and with the latest version of the NVMe 2.0 protocol, will use the capacity of the fifth generation of PCI-Express to achieve stratospheric speeds in sequential transfers , until 13,000 Mbytes per second read and 12,000 Mbytes per second write.

Taking into account the capacity of the South Korean manufacturer and its experience with PCI 5.0 in SSDs for servers, we expect the Samsung 990 PRO to be a solution with its own NAND flash memory, DRAM cache and controller. Versions are advanced with Capacity 1, 2 and 4 TB storage, without ruling out the leap that massive adoption of 8TB would bring in the consumer client market.
