Samsung to increase Chinese OLED panel purchase for its smartphones

In addition to being the world’s leading manufacturer of OLED displays, the Korean company is actively purchasing panels for its side-by-side devices. For example, Samsung uses Chinese-made displays for smartphones and will increase its order several times this year.

According to insider information quoted by The Elec, Samsung plans to purchase 6.5 million OLED panels for smartphones this year from Chinese manufacturers BOE and CSOT. This is about eight times more than last year, when the Chinese supplied the Korean company with 800,000 displays in organic LEDs. BOE will have 3.5 million screens this year and COST will supply the remaining 3 million.

Samsung will need a total of 155.5 million OLED panels for smartphones this year. It will buy 149 million units, or 96% of the total, from its subsidiary Samsung Display and 4% from China. By comparison, in 2021, Samsung purchased 99% of its total OLED panels in the display division. While BOE and CSOT’s share of Samsung’s display supply chain is still small, observers say it will continue to grow in the future.

Also, last year BOE and CSOT reportedly participated in OLED display development for the 2022 model year of the Samsung Galaxy A73, the top representative of Galaxy A series smartphones. CSOT has also created OLED panels for the inexpensive Samsung Galaxy M series models for the Indian market.
