Microsoft is already working on WDDM 3.2 for next-gen Windows

Earlier today, Microsoft released several Windows 11 Insider builds, two on the beta channel (KB5016701) and one on the dev channel. The new Dev Channel build 25188 includes many new features and improvements that Microsoft has outlined in the build’s changelog.

In addition to the announced changes, the new build 25188 includes some hidden features, new animated settings icons and a new task manager with the ability to create live core dumps that can be very useful for troubleshooting. Microsoft may also be working on improving Windows 11 security with a new Secure Boot driver.

In addition, hints of the next generation Windows Display Driver (WDDM) version 3.2 model were also discovered by Twitter user Xeno. The string was found in the DirectX diagnostic tool (dxdiagn.dll) as you can see in the image below:

Currently, it is unknown what the next version of WDDM will bring, but in general, each release adds some new features related to improving productivity and efficiency. The upcoming Windows 11 feature update version 22H2 introduces WDDM v3.1. In AMD’s case there is a huge performance boost for users running OpenGL applications with the 22.7.1 driver, but this is likely due to AMD’s own efforts rather than a WDDM version change. Source
