Snowboarder Tim Blakey saved himself by using the Emergency SOS feature on his iPhone. The signal reached the emergency services from a gorge at an altitude of three kilometers in the mountains of Switzerland.
The snowboarder fell into a snow cushion 5 meters deep, severely restricting movement. Luckily, his iPhone had 3% battery left, which was enough to use the Emergency SOS feature.
Soon rescuers arrived and Blakey was evacuated to the hospital: the man escaped with a bone injury and even managed to catch his flight back to London that evening. Sharing the story on social media, Tim speaks fondly of the rescue team, saying he still doesn’t know how to thank them.
“Thanks to Apple for the side button for emergency calls. This turned out to be very handy when water constantly drips onto the screen. And thanks to my carrier for providing a 3G connection and 3% battery life at a depth of 5 meters under the snow,” wrote Tim Blakey.
